How to Fix Common Painting Problems like a Pro

 In Painting Tips

It is common to hear the complaint ‘This is not coming out the way I want.’ This is often heard from DIY painters who have not mastered skills in surface preparation, paint choice, trim cutting, finishing and so on. Even pro painters will have a problem now and then when they miss some crucial step. Some of these problems are minor and can be ignored, but some change the whole look of a painting job. Here is how to fix some of these common problems;

Paintbrush/roller marks

This is when the edges of the brush or the roller are quite visible, giving the surface a streaked look. This happens due to poor paint flow and unequal levelling.  It is more likely to happen when you use poor quality paints and the wrong nap. The remedy for this is doing over the marked section. Sand down, clean with a damp rag and paint again using a high-quality water paint and brush or roller of the correct nap.

Dripped paints

This happens when painting on a higher surface leaves drips on lower surfaces. This will occur if your technique is poor, leaving too much paint on the brush or roller. If you notice the drips when the paint is still wet, you can easily rectify by running the brush over again and getting rid of the drips. If the paint has dried, the drips have to be scraped off. Sand the surface and paint over again.

Wrinkled paint

Wrinkles make new paint look dated and can be a huge turnoff. Wrinkling will happen when coats are painted on without allowing enough drying intervals. It also happens when the painting is done in extreme weather; too cold or too hot. The paint dries out unevenly.

The remedy to wrinkled paint is getting rid of all the coats down to the bare surface. Sand and clean the surface. Apply primer and wait for it to dry completely before painting the top coat.

Foaming and cratering

This happens when bubbles form on wet paint and then break down to make minuscule holes in the paint. This occurs when low-quality paints are used, which form hard bubbles.  Very quick application of paint contributes to this.

You have to get rid of the paint if the foaming and cratering is extensive. For small patches, you can sand the affected surface and paint over.

Gritty finish

This looks like the paint was painted on a sandy surface. It looks like a rash. Sand the surface and repair with a topcoat.
